The right skills are the key to success

Every character in World of Warcraft has access to a huge variety of skills. Most of the time these skills are separated into four different categories in the player's spellbook. Every player has access to the "General Skills" tab of the spellbook. It lists things like your tradeskills, racial abilities and basic things like Attack, Shoot, Fire. Tracking skills for Herbalism or Mining can also be found here. Depending on your race, professions and sometimes class different abilities will be available here.

The remaining three tabs of skills depend on your class. A player will have one skill tab for each talent tree, and every spell in the game is assigned to one of those categories. A Warrior, for example, will have the categories Arms, Fury and Protection. Skills that are learned via talents can always be found in the skill tab corresponding to the name of the talent tree in question.

The spellbook will only show the highest rank of the available skills. You can view any rank of the spells by marking the checkbox at the top of the, although using lower ranks of spells and abilities has rather limited uses in todays World of Warcraft. Skills and abilities in the spellbook are listed alphabetically. Skills can be used by dragging their icons to the action bars and pressing the corresponding number. A level 80 character in Wrath of the Lich King will have a huge amount of skills though. Knowing which skill to use when, and which skills are useless can mean the difference between winning and losing.
